At Cantemo, we have published two new solutions briefs with our partners, Quantum and Telestream.

These partnerships enable us to enhance file-based workflows in the media production space and provide new levels of integration between Cantemo Portal and our partners' platforms.

The first of these solution briefs, Storage with Intelligence addresses companies who have been investing in outdated integrated production environments, and are looking to migrate to modern and future-proof alternatives. Quantum is a leading expert in scale-out storage, archive and data protection. Its StorNext 5 solutions power modern workflows, enabling high performance, real-time collaboration, and keeping content readily accessible for future use and re-monetization.

Portal will intelligently manage media files throughout the entire lifecycle, from ingest through production, to distribution and archive. Portal ensures quite simply that the media is available at the right time and in the appropriate format.

The second solution brief, Create Next Generation Workflows with Cantemo Portal and Vantage is the first App based on the upcoming Cantemo Transcoder Framework, which allows our partners and customer to easily integrate with third-party transcoders. It involves comprehensive integration between Cantemo Portal and Telestream Vantage Transcode products and provides organisations of all shapes and sizes the ability to deploy next generation, file-based asset management and media transcoding workflows.

Both these solutions will be showcased on our booth at NAB (SL14811).

Cantemo has launched a new major release of its core media asset management software Cantemo Portal and Cantemo Apps.

With this new release, Cantemo is strengthening the core solution with a number of enhanced media management capabilities. It is also extending the integration layer, making it even easier for customers and partners to integrate third party software and enhance the offering.

Cantemo Portal 2.0 includes enhanced and faster search capabilities. The workflows around subclips created by Cantemo Annotation Tool have also been simplified, including search and browsing subclips, as well as the ability to access subclips within the Nonlinear Editing System (NLE).

Cantemo Portal 2.0 includes improved media source tracking, enabling users to keep a track of source media used in projects, collections, and sequences. In the new version, Cantemo Portal supports REDCODE RAW (R3D), the native video format of Red digital cameras. It is now also possible to share assets with users that do not have an account in the system.

A new dark theme User Interface, called Onyx, enhances and intensifies the asset colour appearance and complements the look of the most popular creative applications.

At Cantemo we believe that next generation media asset management should both offer a strong core solution, whilst being flexible enough to be adapted for each individual customer. Not only has the media environment changed rapidly over recent years, each user has a whole host of different requirements. We have built Cantemo Portal 2.0 to better respond to those unique challenges.

Key Customer Win at Guardian News & Media

Earlier this year systems integrator and reseller NMR won a six figure contract to upgrade the digital video infrastructure at Guardian News & Media (GNM), the leading global media organisation which publishes theguardian.com, as well as the Guardian and The Observer newspapers.

NMR upgraded GNM’s video content creation capabilities with a flexible and future-proof set-up based around Cantemo Portal and Quantum’s StorNext appliances. The current video editing and content creation technology will be replaced with a flexible platform based on Cantemo Portal Enterprise DAM (Digital Asset Management) system.

A key component of the project has been the migration of the Final Cut Server content to Cantemo Portal to create a central repository that can be accessed by Guardian staff not only in London but also in other group offices around the world.

Systems integrator and reseller NMR has won a six figure contract to upgrade the digital video infrastructure at Guardian News & Media (GNM), the leading global media organisation which publishes theguardian.com, the Guardian newspaper and The Observer newspaper.

Video content creation capabilities to be upgraded with flexible and future-proof set-up based around Cantemo Portal.

The deal will see current video editing and content creation technology replaced with a flexible and future-proof set-up based around Cantemo Portal Enterprise DAM (Digital Asset Management) system, using Vidispine MAM backbone APIs.

The turnkey solution will also include Adobe Creative Cloud with Premiere Pro editing, ToolsOnAir Just:In ingest, a Quantum StorNext high performance SAN and an Object Matrix MatrixStore nearline archive with off site replication.

As well as supplying equipment through its partners, NMR will provide installation, integration, customization, migration, training and on-going technical support services.

A key component of the project will see current Final Cut Server content migrated to Cantemo Portal to create a central repository that can be accessed by Guardian staff not only in London but also in other group offices around the world.

Part of the driver for this upgrade was a requirement to access video from any location. One of the trends we are seeing is that people want web-based interfaces and the ability to access, upload, edit and approve rich media from anywhere in the world. This suits perfectly what Cantemo Portal offers.

Neil Andersom, Managing Director, NMR

The Cantemo Portal DAM, which was selected from a shortlist of five, will be used not just for content management and project sharing but also for content discovery and improved distribution.

Additional info

  • Adobe Premiere editing workstations will be installed throughout, replacing the current Apple Final Cut Pro set-up. NMR will provide Final Cut Pro to Premiere training.
  • Object Matrix MatrixStore will be used for as a high-speed nearline archive with offsite replication. LTO tape will be used for storing sensitive material internally within GNM.
  • Alongside hardware and software integration NMR, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Consultant Partner, will provide custom S3 Glacier cloud-based long-term archive integration and will build a custom Portal DAM ‘App’ for this.
  • Significant customization is part of the project. Swedish IT consultant CodeMill is providing User Interface design while Moo Systems is providing a plug-in for the Final Cut Server to Portal DAM migration and for integrating Portal DAM with the tape library, via Archiware PresSTORE software.
  • A dedicated production management layer will be added to Portal DAM along with rights management capabilities.

They have a great track record within the media space and experience of bespoke projects like this. It is not an IT project. It is digital video. But neither is it a ‘Soho’ type installation. This is a new world of broadcast, using broadband to satisfy the public’s appetite for on-demand video content viewed on mobile and other non-TV devices.

Grant Brember, the digital video and transformation consultant working on the project on behalf of GNM on the decision to appoint NMR for this project

GNM creates digital video content for its websites and apps and also for TV, cinema and other platforms. Content types include interviews, news and feature items, multi-camera studio shows and re-purposed licensed online feeds.

Installation of the new digital video infrastructure is currently underway. Testing will take place in August with training in September before a phased go live in October.
