Leading Shopping Channel Migrates to Portal

This case study is focused on a multinational cable, satellite, and broadcast television network specialised in home shopping. The organisation is active in the US, Asia, and Europe with 24⁄7 operations.
The channel’s German operations was finding that the ability to manage media well and find content easily and quickly was becoming all the more important. It is continually producing new content for its products and ranges and delivering this media both via linear TV and online.
Therefore, the German arm of the organisation brought in leading systems integrator, Wellen+Nöthen, to help identify and implement a suitable solution to manage this ever-growing catalogue of media files.
The Final Cut
The shopping channel was already using Final Cut Server and had well-established workflows for the media content. However working within a discontinued solution was beginning to be problematic. It was clear that pretty soon, it would no longer be possible to operate the software, therefore the channel was looking for an alternative solution.
At the same time, with so much existing media, and with existing workflows, preserving those was extremely crucial.
Cantemo Portal™ was selected, meaning for the shopping channels that files could be easily and automatically migrated from Final Cut Server into Cantemo Portal.
The migration itself was handled by moosystems. It was originally planned to export all data into Cantemo Portal, however having decided that not all items were necessary, the users were able to select the files they wished to be included in the new system. Should other media be needed at any time, these can be easily selected on an individual basis and added into Portal.
The shopping channel had a number of other existing software tools in place throughout the workflow, including Telestream Vantage for transcoding, and Adobe Premiere for editing. Cantemo Portal, through a number of out-of-the-box Apps and integration layers, was easily integrated with the existing systems, enabling the shopping channel to achieve one holistic system for the entire workflow.
Expanding the Wish List
Ensuring all content is produced in house format is a key factor for the channel. Cantemo Portal makes it possible for this to be instantly verified when uploaded and if a video doesn’t comply, it is either converted to the correct format or flagged as not conforming.
The channel also adopted a much stricter metadata strategy and used Cantemo Portal to make the fields mandatory, ensuring each video has a complete set of metadata. Even if video files are added automatically through watch folders or as uploads, the system automatically picks up the associated metadata.
We have been thoroughly impressed and appreciative of the support we received from Cantemo, Wellen+Nöthen, and moosystems throughout this project, and the outcome is an extremely intuitive and seamless workflow for all our media content, regardless of the distribution channel.
With similar studios around the world, the long-term plan is to replicate what has been achieved in Germany elsewhere across the world. Of course, thanks to the web-based interface, these different locations will also be able to share content as and when necessary.
With the media landscape becoming ever more complex for channel providers, and content often being delivered both via linear TV and online, ensuring content can be found easily and quickly and distributed to the right channel, is all the more important than ever before.
