Guardian News & Media Transformation
Guardian News & Media (GNM) is the leading global media organisation, which publishes theguardian.com, the Guardian newspaper and The Observer newspaper. The web platform, Guardian Unlimited launched in 1999 and now has over 140 million unique browsers per month, making it the second most widely read English-language news website in the world.
The company’s use of video has grown alongside that. Just as it was at the forefront at the start of the web age, the Guardian now wants to be at the forefront of video.
Part of the driver for this upgrade was a requirement to access video from any location. One of the trends we are seeing is that people want web-based interfaces and the ability to access, upload, edit and approve rich media from anywhere in the world. This suits perfectly what Cantemo Portal™ offers.
The existing system was in need of replacement and the Guardian was looking for a solid asset management system, which could be opened up to the whole organisation. When the Guardian evaluated suppliers, systems integrator and reseller, NMR was selected because of its pedigree in video and deep understanding of the technology.
It has been an absolute massive success. Our staff can produce their content without there being the inevitable delays or lack of capacity or any of the technological blockers that we had there before.
The video editing and content creation technology was replaced with a flexible and future-proof set-up based around Cantemo Portal Enterprise DAM (Digital Asset Management) system, using Vidispine MAM backbone APIs. Final Cut Server content was migrated to Cantemo Portal to create a central repository that can be accessed by Guardian staff around the globe. It is used, not just for content management and project sharing, but also for content discovery and improved distribution.
